Educator and
Technophile
My
career as an educator spans 33 years from an intermediate school
educator in East New York to a Technology Teacher Trainer (T3) in
Longwood. During my time in Longwood, I have taught on the elementary
and intermediate levels, coached sports teams, been a club advisor
and taught adult education. Among the most significant achievements
of my educational career was being inducted as a member of "Who's
Who of American Teachers" in 1984. Several years later
in 1997, I was included in the New York State Academy of Teaching
and Learning based on an elementary newspaper project for which
I was the faculty advisor.
In
1998, Longwood appointed me to the position of Elementary Technology
Teacher Trainer. Included in my responsibilities was the training
of over 300 teachers from the District's five elementary buildings.
My selection for this position was based on my reputation as an
educator as well as integrator of technology into my classroom.
During the past five years as Technology Teacher Trainer (T3), I
became proficient in the training and use of numerous software packages
from the Microsoft Office Suite to the Macromedia suite of web design
tools. Due to the training implemented by our district, the Longwood
staff has grown form neophite users to sophisticated integrators
of technology into the classroom. Our teachers have participated
actively in Model Schools and SCOPE workshops as a means of demonstrating
the skills garnered through training. In 2003, we had 25 representatives
in attendance Model Schools Celebration of Technology. The year
before, the Longwood program, and its participation in Model Schools,
was featured on News 12.
Over
the summer vacations, I facilitated several workshops offered to
Longwood educators sponsored by the district. The end products of
these workshops were the creation of over 50 WebQuests by our staff
as well as a manual including over 30 educational projects and activities
available to our staff in booklet form. The administrative technology
group (ASSET) honored my work with a technology staff development
award in 2002.
My
position evolved over the past four years to include creation and
maintenance of the Longwood School District web site. I received
webmaster certification from SCOPE in 1999 as a means addressing
this additional responsibility. Under my creative guidance and coordination,
the Longwood website won an unprecedented number of educational
and design awards from recognition as a Newsday Cool Site
to the International Association of Web Designers award.
Our website was featured three times as a USA Best Bet
last year. Considering that USA Today only selects 150
of the best educational sites each year this is an impressive honor.
During
my years as a staff developer, I have become an instructor for MESTRACT
and SCOPE. Included in my course offerings are desktop publishing
courses using Microsoft Publisher as well as online course offerings
on the creation of WebQuests. Due to the popularity of the WebQuest
online course, a new course offering featuring Front Page will be
offered for the first time this summer (2003).
My
experience as an educator, technology staff developer and expert
web designer is now being made available to surrounding school districts
on Long Island as a consultant. In each of my roles, the goal is
the same..." to implement technology into the educational process."
